West Beverly High Art Club |
Hello & welcome to the West Beverly High Art Club! Yes, in fact West Beverly High is a fictional school that is attended by the characters of Beverly Hills 90210, but nonetheless we started an art club that will feature artwork inspired by this tour de force show and maybe some others too. Contributors include me (Nick), my girlfriend (Jill), some fantastic Guest artists and some other folks we know (maybe you too?). Dig it! |

Dylan’s got a gun by Nick

Tensions run hot when Dylan goes all out “Taxi Driver” after his car-jacking incident. When Brandon breaks into Dylan’s house to grab the awesome anniversary present for his parents (a photo of then printed on a jigsaw puzzle), Dylan gets freaked in the shower & grabs his 9. Yes viewers, shit just got real. After he almost murders his best friend, Dylan decides to get rid of the gun, and nothing bad ever torments Dylan again…

Stitchery of Dylan McKay by Stevi
Embroidered thread on cloth
Gift of Vader & Boba Ambrose
2011
The subtle, supple beauty of Luke Perry’s youthful visage is captured so elegantly in this one-of-a-kind stitchery by visiting artist Stevi. The artist dissects one of the many sweeping moments from the show’s intro, as Dylan McKay throws a glance off-camera. Just as we ponder similar mysteries throughout art’s past - The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper - Dylan McKay’s action, frozen in time for us, the viewers, begs the question-what lovely creature could ensnare the attention of this heartthrob? Is he glancing back at his tumultuous childhood - the one without a father? Maybe he’s glancing at us?

Dylan comforts his little half-sister when she gets her first period
by Nick, Ink on paper
Collection of West Beverly High Art Club
2011
Dylan faces some tough obstacles in his time throughout the series, from alcohol & drug addiction to love triangles to fear & paranoia. But nothing quite like the challenge of figuring out what to do when little Erica (12), his half-sister, gets her first period. If only the writers of the show had realized Dylan’s true calling - they could have had him pursue a career in counseling girls as they reach that special time in their lives, but alas, we have to watch him keep furrowing his brow as he wastes away his trust fund. I’m still satisfied though.

Fist-Bumpin’ 90’s Style by Nick
Colored pencil & ink on paper
Collection of West Beverly High Art Club
2011
One of the most remarkable moments about the first Beverly Hills 90210 intro is when Brandon gives a little fist bump to the beat of the song, you know that part that goes “Dunt-Dunt”, after the “Dena-Dena… Dena-Dena.” Anyways, this is my favorite moment of the intro, and so I drew a picture of it. Hope you enjoy.
